Title tags are one of the most important components that inform visitors and search engines what your site is all about. Title tags are used in targeting the keyword relevance of a site, and should be compelling and informative. Equally important, title tags are the first impression of a web page – which can draw visitors in or send them searching for something more relevant to their search.

Your title tag should contain your most important keywords and phrases that describe your business - they should be the semantic center of attention while remaining accurate and descriptive.

For example, lets say you own a portrait photography business in Wichita. A good example of a keyword-rich website title tag would be:

“ Wichita portrait photography - John Doe Photography - Kansas “

Or

“ Portrait photography Wichita - John Doe Photography “

Certain words such as “the, a, an, of, and are called “stop words” because they are so common that search engines won’t included them. Avoid using any stop words in your title tags.

Each page of your website needs to have its own unique title tag to avoid penalties due to duplicate content ie. additional pages that use the same identical title tags as other pages in your site's index or structure. Search engines look upon duplicate content with great suspicion and usually regard them as originating from spam sites or other sites of ill repute.
